“I think of offensive lineman as a blue collar job,” said Joe Pearson, senior offensive lineman. “You don’t get much credit, but you still work your tail off everyday.”
After two seasons at Guilford, Pearson, 6-foot-2 inches tall and over 300 pounds, is primed to perform at the professional level.
His distinguished career at Guilford, featured a 2013 Dream Bowl All-Star Game appearance and performances at multiple NFL and CFL combines:
Raw beginnings
“If you look at the beginning of Joe’s career, there were a lot of red flags,” said head football coach Chris Rusiewicz.
After transferring from the University of Southern Mississippi to Appalachian State University, and finally, to Guilford his junior year, Pearson recalls that a “pretty bad attitude” was one of his red flags.
“I felt like I was better than everyone else,” said Pearson. “Coaches appreciated my talent but not my attitude.”
“You knew he was going to be a hit or miss,” said Brad Davis, assistant football coach and offensive line coordinator.
“He was that guy who could go out on the field and get three 15-yard penalties.”
The evolution: raw to real
“Seeing him grow to where he is today, it’s 180 degrees from when he arrived,” Rusiewicz said. “He went from a player no one knew to the number 57 center in college football today.”
What led to the change?
“It took a conversation with some coaches,” Rusiewicz said. “Finally, he realized that he needed to step up and dominate. And he did.”
“What my coaches told me was a light switch for me,” Pearson said. “I took their advice with me the whole season, and I dominated the opposition like no one else on our team did.”
Pearson finished the season with Second Team All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference honors and captained the Dream Bowl All-Star Game, where he led his team to a 37–0 rout.
“All season, he was such a dominant force that it was fun playing next to him,” said sophomore offensive lineman Faris El-Ali.
According to senior defensive lineman and team captain Daniel Biggerstaff, Pearson’s competitive

Eric Noll addresses the Board of Education on May 14 about his disappointment on the approval of differential tuition. Photo by Ted Holliday.
On April 15, the LBCC Board of Education approved a $3 per-credit tuition increase. In addition, the board approved another policy affecting how much students pay for certain classes: “Differential Tuition.”
A growing trend to recoup expenses of selected degree programs in colleges is implementing differential tuition fees. The new fees are intended to help recover expenses from programs that cost colleges more to operate. Some programs targeted include degrees or certificates that are ready for immediate employment after completion.
“Differential Tuition,” put into plain terms equates to “Additional Tuition.” The new expense is being absorbed by students and is above and beyond the $3 increase already implemented. Starting Summer of 2013, this new fee will be imposed on selected classes.
Certain lower-division transfer courses with labs such as Animal Science, Biology, and Chemistry will see increases of $19.70 per course. In Career and Technology Education programs, the increase will be the standard tuition rate plus 21 percent per credit. Other programs that have not been targeted under this new program will continue to pay the standard tuition fee.
Dean of Instruction Jonathan Paver said, “Some programs have higher costs. To help recover some of those costs, this model was accepted by the [LBCC] board [of education].”
Traditionally the expense of these programs has been disbursed equally among all programs. With the diminishing state funding to the university systems, new ways to recover costs needed to be implemented.
Students may not be aware of the additional fees until they receive their statement from the college. On the billing statement there will be an extra line stating “additional tuition.”
“We are preparing for questions and more information will be available soon on the LBCC web site,” Paver said.
Not everyone is with happy with this new policy. Full-time student Sandra Moreno said, “I’m a single mom, work part-time, and I go to school to make a better life for my kids and I. I can’t afford the additional

Sophomore left fielder Jake Thomas belted two two-run homers, and the Binghamton baseball team took Saturday’s series finale against Albany, 10-3, at Varsity Field.
With the victory, the Bearcats (27-22, 16-13 America East) won the three-game set and secured the No. 2 seed in next week’s America East tournament, dropping Albany (23-23-1, 16-14 AE) to the No. 3 spot.
Thomas, who went 5-for-9 with five RBIs on the weekend, delivered his first shot with one out in the first inning, giving Binghamton a 2-0 lead. Albany answered with a run in the first, but Thomas homered in the third to put the Bearcats ahead 4-1.
Binghamton added two more in the fifth before blowing the game open with a four-run eighth inning.
Senior starter Jay Lynch, who improved to 6-4, allowed one earned run in four innings, while freshman pitcher Jake Cryts tossed three scoreless innings of relief.
Junior center fielder Bill Bereszniewicz, sophomore right fielder Zach Blanden and junior first baseman Brian Ruby each had two hits, while Thomas finished with three.
Binghamton took Friday’s series opener, 3-2, in nine innings after battling back from a 2-0 first-inning deficit.
After Bereszniewicz, the No. 9 hitter, singled and stole second to start the top of the ninth, the Bearcats’ top of the order had the go-ahead run in scoring position with no outs. Blanden worked a walk, freshman third baseman David Schanz laid down a sacrifice bunt and Thomas drew an intentional walk to load the bases.
With two outs, Albany sophomore pitcher Cameron Sorgie threw a wild pitch, allowing Bereszniewicz to cross the plate with the go-ahead run.
BU sophomore pitcher Greg Ostner, who tossed five scoreless innings in relief, nailed down the win, disposing a two-out single with a game-ending groundout.
Blanden, Schanz and Ruby each went 2-for-4.
In Friday’s nightcap, Binghamton plated two runs with two outs in the fifth inning to take a 4-3 lead, as Ruby scored on a wild pitch after doubling in Thomas. But Albany responded with a run in the fifth and sixth innings to command a 5-4 advantage heading into the
